SUMMER HOLIDAYS’ HOMEWORK
ENGLISH CORE
CLASS – XII

Q1. Familiarize yourself with the following topics from Section B [Advanced Writing Skills] of your Core English paper:
A. Classified Advertisement
Go through the leading national dailies and select classified ads related to the list of advertisements given below:
1. Situations Vacant
2. Situations Wanted
3. For Sale
4. To Let
5. Lost & Found
6. Educational
7. Matrimonial
8. Missing People & Pets
9. Vehicles For Sale

Select 3-5 cut-outs from each category and paste them in your register.
The cut-outs should be pasted inside a box [ one for each category ] with the correct heading/title.

B. Posters and Notices

Select Posters & Notices related to social issues like posters on ‘Child Labour’, ’Pollution’, ’Water Conservation’, ‘Drug Addiction’, & ‘Smoking’.
Paste them in your register.
Don’t forget the box.

Remember that the posters must contain:
1. Eye Catching Slogans
2. Name and Address of the Issuing Authority

C. Prepare the following topics for classroom discussions:
1. India’s Preparedness for the Common Wealth Games
2. Do you think that President Obama will bring about a change in the global political scenario?
3. The Plight of Street Children Forced into Labour.

LITERARY TERMS:
Log onto http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/science_fiction.
Read the write-up on Science Fiction from page no. 10 to 12 and answer the following questions, following the instructions carefully:
1. What is the difference between science fiction and fantasy? [page 1]
2. What, according to Robert A. Heinlien, is the definition of science fiction? [page 2]
3. Page 3 contains a wide range of books by Science Fiction Writers. Mention the names of five writers of the Early Twentieth Century. [page 3]
4. Differentiate between Hard Science Fiction and Soft Science Fiction. [pages 4 & 5]
5. Define a story based on alternate history. Cite an example from the text book [Hornbill(class 11) & [page 6]
6. Pick out words which mean the same as the given phrases/words: [page 7] i. Prophesying great and dramatic events ii. After effects iii. A group of three related literary works iv. An imaginary place where all is perfect v. An excess of emotional drama

E. Section D [Literature]:
For Section D [Literature] of your Question Paper attempt the following:
· Definition of a Red Indian / Native American [Memories of Childhood]
· A Biographical Feature on Bama [Memories of Childhood]
· An Article on the Past and Present of Gemini Studios[Poets and Pancakes]
